These days, technology websites think up ever more creative ways to test the durability of smartphone models. It is now commonplace for websites to purposefully drop phones onto hard surfaces to see how sturdy they are, as well as more creative tests such as putting them into a blender or damaging the screen using various objects to see which one is tougher.
However, NokiaPowerUser has recently reported on perhaps the most creative and ambitious durability test ever carried out on a smartphone. The website reports on a test carried out on the Nokia Lumia 920 by Chip Magazine. The Nokia Lumia 920 has proved time and time again that it is able to withstand considerable punishment, but this test shows that it is in a league of its own when it comes to durability.
The handset was attached to a balloon along with a GPS tracker, and was released into the atmosphere, where it floated to the edge of space, which is no doubt the highest a smartphone has ever been. The handset was of course exposed to intense atmospheric pressure, as well as temperatures of -60 degrees. Furthermore, the phone then survived a 35,000 metre drop, and although a parachute was used is certainly an impressive feat.
When it landed back on earth, the handset was tracked down and retrieved, and astonishingly appeared to have sustained no noticeable damage. This is not the first time that a Nokia Lumia 920 handset has been exposed to severe environments and survived unscathed.
